THRU 1600Z JULY 20, 2005

Northwestern Canada:
Significant fires burning between Great Bear Lake and Great Slave
Lake in the Northwest Territories are producing a large quantity
of smoke. Smoke this morning in GOES 10 imagery has spread southward
into the northern/central British Columbia and Alberta and northern
Saskatchewan Provinces. The full extent of the smoke cannot be seen to
the extensive cloud cover across Alaska and Northwestern Canada

Western U.S.:
Morning GOES-10 Visible imagery shows an area of smoke spreading across
eastern/central Utah and Western Colorado and parts of northern/central
Arizona and southeastern California. Numerous hotspots/fires can be
seen in Utah and Arizona in GOES 10 channel 2 imagery.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
