DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 0045Z August 01, 2005

Alaska:
Multiple fires across the Western Yukon River Valley are producing dense
smoke fanning about 40 mi (on average) between NW to SW.  Thin smoke
covers nearly all the fires and areas west from Kotzebue Sound southward
across SW Alaska, E Bristol Bay, E Alaska Peninsula, Kodiak island and
into the Gulf of Alaska south of the Kenai Peninsula

Oregon:
Moderately dense smoke with mixed cumulus and thunderstorms from the
Snake One fire near the OR/ID boarder is in a line 13mi wide and extends
to near Pollack, ID in Idaho county.

Washington:
Moderate to dense smoke from a new fire near Telma, WA in Chelan county
is in a line 35mi wide and extends NE 156mi to Lower Arrow Lake in
British Columbia.

Moderately dense smoke from a new fire near Goode Mtn in far N Chelan
county is in a line 14mi wide and extends NE 40mi to the US/Canada
boarder.

British Columbia:
Dense smoke from a fire near Lytton, BC is in a line 6mi  wide and
extends NNE 68mi to near Horsefly Lake in Central, BC.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
