DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 0030Z August 17, 2005

Alaska/Canada:
Widespread fires across Alaska continue to produce dense smoke. An
extensive plume extends westward over the Bering Sea, eastward to
the Mackenzie Mountains in the Northwest territories and southward to
northwestern Bristish Columbia. Thin and moderate smoke from scattered
fires located south of the Great Bear Lake is drifting northward.

Northern U.S:
Scattered fires over northern Idaho, southeastern Washington and
southwestern Oregon are producing thin plumes of smoke. Thin smoke from
Canada/Alaska and Northwest fires has been entrained into the circulation
of the frontal zone that extends from the Great Lakes Region to eastern
Canada.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
