DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z September 2, 2005

Idaho, Montana and Utah:
Numerous fires in central Idaho were producing thick plumes of smoke
that extended eastward into southwest Montana. Source regions for this
smoke included Hells Canyon, the Bitterroots and Clearwater Mountains.
A blaze in Montana along the Sanders/Mineral County line has resulted
in a plume stretching approximately 55 nmi to the northeast. A fire in
Ravalli County Montana generated a thick plume that extended 92 nmi to
the northeast. Another blaze was active in Utah's Unita National Forest
near Soldier Summit. Smoke from this fire reached the Colorado line.

California:
A fire in Tulare County produced a plume that extended 30 nmi to the
east while a smaller fire to the south in Inyo County resulted in a
plume that stretched 15 nmi to the east.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
