DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z September 5 2005

Montana/Idaho/Saskatchewan:
Numerous fires burning from the previous day across central and southeast
Idaho have left and area of dense smoke about 200 km wide stretching
across the Inter-Mountain/central Montana region into central Canada. The
area of smoke is moving towards the northeast from southeast Idaho
(near Idaho Falls) and spreading across Yellowstone National Park in
northwest Wyoming through central Montana (east of Great Falls) and into
southern Saskatchewan. The full extent of the smoke cannot be seen due
to cloud cover.

Southwest Ontario/Upper Mississippi Valley:
An area of moderate smoke mixed in with clouds stretches from southwest
Ontario south into eastern Minnesota and across most of Wisconsin.
The smoke begins to thin out and mix with haze across eastern Iowa,
northern/central Illinois and northeast Missouri.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
