DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z April 19, 2008

Oklahoma:
Along the panhandle, in Texas County, a moderately dense smoke plume was
observed moving towards the southeast into northern Texas (panhandle),
and extended out 100 or so miles from the source. A second moderately
dense smoke plume, this time on the border of Roger Mills and Ellis
Counties, was seen moving towards the southeast as well.

Georgia:
In Jones County, a heavy smoke plume was spotted moving towards the
northeast, however, the smoke became obscured later this afternnon as
high clouds started to move in from the approaching storm.

E. North Dakota/ W. Minnesota:
Numerous agricultural fires took place this afternoon and evening,
producing mostly small, light smoke plumes. Due to variable winds,
the plumes drifted off to the north and west.

A line of dust was also observed behind the low pressure system across
the upper Midwest. Areas affected include South Dakota, Nebraska, and
Kansas. The line of dust only appeared to be 30 miles or so wide.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
