DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z May 9, 2008

Texas:
A heavy smoke plume in Refugio County was spotted moving to the northeast
and extended out 20 miles from the source. Additionally, moderately
dense smoke extended out 45 miles or so from the source.

Louisiana:
In Vernon County, a moderately dense smoke plume was observed moving
east and extended out 30 miles from the source into Rapides County.

Nevada:
A heavy smoke plume in Lyon County is currently moving east into Churchill
County, at least 75 miles from the source.

Florida:
In Brevard County, a heavy smoke plume was seen racing off to the
northeast and extended out some 75 miles. Lighter smoke densities
extended much further out over the Atlantic Ocean.

Besides there being a few isolated, heavy smoke plumes across the United
States, light smoke/smog was spotted earlier in the afternoon over the
Northern Gulf of Mexico, drifting towards the northeast. This smoke/smog
is presumed to be from oil wells in the Bay of Campeche.

EVANS

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
