DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0015Z NOVEMBER 20, 2008

Southeast and Gulf Coast States:
Only isolated generally light smoke plumes were observed moving northeast
from ag burns across the South. An exceptional fire appeared in Vernon
County, Louisiana, and produced a light to moderately dense plume of
smoke that extended east for 120 km.

Southwest:
Moderately dense but narrow smoke plumes were moving generally east from
fires in Gila and Coconino counties in Arizona and from Socorro County,
New Mexico.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
