DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0345Z March 7, 2012

Texas:
Blowing dust was observed in the Texas panhandle this evening.
Dust originated around Lubbock in Yoakum, Terry, and Lynn Counties.
Brisk southerly winds moved this dust northward near Amarillo and into
Deaf Smith, Randall, and Armstrong Counties by sunset.

Arizona:
Numerous areas of blowing dust were observed in Arizona this evening.
Dust originating near the border of Navajo and Coconino Counties moved to
the northeast and over the Four Corners area by sunset.  An additional
area of dust began this evening in Mohave County, west of Kingman.
This dust mixed with heavy dust from California and moved to the northeast
into southern Utah.

California/Nevada:
Moderate to heavy blowing dust began in California tonight.  Blowing dust
and sand began in San Bernardino, Riverside, Imperial, and San Diego
Counties.  This dust moved to the northeast and over Las Vegas (Clark
County, NV) through sunset.  An area of dense dust was seen to the west
of the Salton Sea.  An additional area of dust originated near Lompac,
California in Santa Barbara County. This dust moved into the Pacific
Ocean and over Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands by sunset.

Mexico:
Dust from an area west of Caborca, Mexico (Sonora) moved to the northeast
and near the Mexico/Arizona border by sunset.  Another area with origins
in northern Chihuahua moved to the northeast and crossed the US border
near El Paso.

Georgia/South Carolina:
Numerous agricultural fires burned in the southeastern United States this
evening. A few isolated areas of detached smoke were visible throughout
eastern Georgia and South Carolina.

AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
