DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z March 27, 2012

Gulf of Mexico:
Wildfires in northern Florida produced smoke which moved southward into
the Gulf of Mexico. A brush fire near Tallahassee produced smoke - some
of which traveled parallel to the Florida coast and neared Sarasota and
Manatee Counties by sunset.
A fire west of Pensacola produced smoke which moved to the southwest
and neared extreme southeastern Louisiana by sunset.

Ontario/New York:
An area of moderately dense smoke continued to move slowly to the east
across central/eastern Ontario. A narrow band of aerosol was observed
from Syracuse to Rochester and further north into Lake Ontario. It is
likely this is remnant smoke from the Midwest over the past week.

Colorado:
Blowing dust originated in several locations this evening in Colorado.
In Pueblo County, dust began near the towns of Avondale and Boone.
This dust moved northeast and reached Lincoln County, CO by sunset.
Further to the west, blowing dust started in Alamosa and Saguache
Counties. Dust from this area moved to the northeast and reached Morgan
and Washington Counties by sunset.

A wildfire in Jefferson County southwest of Denver produced a heavy
smoke plume this evening. Smoke from this fire likely mixed with the
above mentioned dust east of Denver.

Kansas:
Numerous agricultural fires were viewed on imagery this evening; however,
cloud cover prevented smoke detection. It is likely that isolated areas
of smoke can be present in the Kansas Flint Hills.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
