DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z May 06, 2012

Smoke:
Florida into the Atlantic:
The County Line fire and another fire near Baldwin (west of Jacksonville)
were producing smoke plumes this morning along with remnant smoke that
extended from the fires eastward at least 575km into the Atlantic. The
smoke was mainly light density.

Northern Mexico and Texas:
Fires continued to burn through the night in Mexico in Coahuila, southern
Chihuahua, Durango and Sinaloa states. Areas of light smoke were noted
in the vicinity of the fires. However, there may also be remnant smoke
over portions of south and central Texas but extensive cloud cover is
hindering detection.

Blowing dust:
West Texas/Eastern New Mexico:
Gusty northerly winds behind a cold front has produced an area of light
blowing dust this morning mainly between Clovis NM and Plainview TX and
extending to the south approaching Hobbs NM and Seminole TX.

Wyoming to North Dakota:
An area of what is believed to be long range dust transport from Asia
was seen in a narrow band extending from southeast Wyoming through the
Black Hills of South Dakota into southwest North Dakota. The aerosol
was quite light.

Alberta:
Another area of what is believed to be long range dust transport from
Asia (as per the Naval Research Lab aerosol forecast) was seen from the
northeast corner of British Columbia and extending to the southeast down
the east side of the Rockies into southern Alberta and then curling
up to the north into northeast Alberta to the western end of Lake
Athabasca. This was mainly light density aerosol, except for an area
that was moderately dense in central Alberta.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
