DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z August 23, 2012
US: Smoke for wildfires in northern California, Oregon, and Idaho continues to spread east northeastward. An area of mostly moderate smoke extends from northern California, northwest Nevada and southern Oregon into southern and central Idaho, southwest Montana and the Dakotas. Lighter density smoke continues east through Iowa, Illinois and Indiana and south into Missouri and Arkansas. The northern portion of the light smoke also extends north into Manitoba and Ontario. Canada: Remnant smoke from the fires in the northwestern US has traveled northward into Manitoba, extending up to the border of Nunavut, and Ontario. Blowing Dust: A broad area of light blowing dust from the Sahara has crossed the Atlantic and was seen extending through central and southern Florida into the Gulf of Mexico. -Salemi THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED.
