DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z March 5, 2020
SMOKE: Florida...A number of smoke plumes of varying density were visible across the Florida peninsula which moved off mainly to the northeast with a number of the plumes merging to form larger areas of smoke. Central U.S… A large number of seasonal fires were detected over eastern Kansas, southeastern Nebraska, southern Iowa, northern Missouri, and northern and central Illinois though only a few thin density smoke plumes were seen in satellite imagery due to cloudiness moving across the region. Farther to the south, significant cloud cover over the South Central and Southeastern U.S. greatly limited fire and smoke detection in satellite imagery. Cuba… Widespread fires across Cuba produced quite a bit of smoke with areas of thin density smoke seen spreading to the north off the northwestern part of the island. This smoke drifted northward across the lower Florida Keys. Mexico/Central America… A significant amount of seasonal fire activity was noted over Mexico and Central America resulting in areas of smoke over the region. DUST: Nebraska… A swath of what is believed to be thin density blowing dust originated from western Nebraska and moved eastward over the central part of the state during the afternoon. Oregon… A couple of narrow bands of thin to moderate density blowing dust could be seen moving to the east from sources in south central Oregon. JS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
