DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY

SMOKE: Western and Central U.S./Pacific... A large area of moderate to heavy density smoke associated with intense wildfire activity in northern and central California as well as north-central Oregon was detected on satellite imagery. Moderate to heavy density smoke was observed over most of central and southeastern Oregon, northern and central California including the San Francisco Bay region, the San Joaquin Valley, and north of Los Angeles in addition to several hundred miles offshore over the eastern Pacific. Moderate to heavy density smoke was also observed further to the east of the region moving mainly eastward over most of Nevada, Utah, Colorado, parts of southern Wyoming, and out over the Central Plains including most of Kansas and Nebraska. Light to moderate density smoke was also observed over parts of the Mississippi Valley including southern Minnesota, most of Iowa, and a large part of Missouri. This large region of smoke was generally moving eastward. Carolinas... A small region of light density smoke was observed over parts of eastern North and South Carolina during the morning and early afternoon. DUST: Atlantic... A large Saharan dust plume covers most of the tropical Atlantic, the central subtropical Atlantic, the western Caribbean Sea, and the parts of the Gulf of Mexico. Konon THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED.
