DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z November 6, 2020

SMOKE:
California/Nevada...
Smoke from the Creek, Rattlesnake, and SQF Complex fires in east central
California still could be seen for a while into the afternoon before
clouds spread over the area limiting additional information in satellite
imagery. Prior to this, the more moderate to thick density smoke emanating
from these fires appeared to move more to the northeast toward the border
with western Nevada.

Central and Southeastern U.S./South Central Canada...
What are believed to be mainly seasonal and agricultural type fires were
scattered across a broad region stretching from south central Canada
southward over the Central U.S. and Southeastern U.S. A more concentrated
batch of burning was seen extending from northern Iowa and eastern South
Dakota northward over southwestern Minnesota, eastern North Dakota,
and into southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba. Only a
few smoke plumes though could be seen due to cloudiness spreading across
the region. Scattered smoke plumes of primarily thin density were also
visible over the Central, South Central, and Southeastern U.S.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
