DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0240Z July 10, 2023

SMOKE:
Canada, United States, Northern Mexico, Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific
Ocean...
The wildfire activity continues in Canada scattered from the Yukon,
Northwest Territories, and British Columbia and extending to the east and
southeast across the southern tier of Canada to west central Quebec. The
most numerous area of wildfires were seen over west central Quebec, and
especially over the northern half of British Columbia and Alberta, along
with the southwest part of the Northwest Territories. A large area of
light density smoke primarily from the Canadian fires had spread across
much of Canada and the United States as well as northern Mexico including
the Baja, some of the northeastern Pacific off the coastal portions of
western Canada and the northwestern United States, and over much of the
northern and central Atlantic. A very large area of high density smoke
extended over a significant part of northwestern and western Canada
and extended from there to the southeast across south central Canada
and over some of the north central United States. Farther to the east,
some thicker smoke was seen over central and northern Quebec.

DUST:
Caribbean Region and the Western Atlantic Ocean…
An area of Saharan Dust was seen extending from the far southeastern
Gulf of Mexico and the northwestern Caribbean Sea to off the east coast
of Florida. The western edge of a larger area of Saharan dust was seen
extending through the eastern Caribbean Islands and into the eastern
Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
