DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z October 7, 2023

SMOKE:
Central and Eastern U.S./South Central and Southeastern Canada/Far
Western Atlantic Ocean…
A large area of remnant thin density smoke, which may be a combination
of leftover smoke from the northwestern Canada wildfires and from
recent days of seasonal/agricultural fire activity and a few wildfires
scattered across portions of the south central and southeastern U.S.,
was visible this morning over parts of the central and eastern U.S. as
well as central and southeastern Ontario in Canada.

Western U.S./Far Eastern Pacific off the Pacific Northwest U.S. Coast…
Patches of mostly thin density leftover smoke were seen this morning over
portions of the western U.S. including the 4 corners region, central and
northern California, northwestern Nevada, southwestern Idaho, and off the
west coast of Washington over the far eastern Pacific Ocean. This smoke
was attributed to some prescribed/controlled fires and a few wildfires
scattered across the western U.S. Locally thicker smoke was visible
closer to some of the active fires this morning.

Northwestern Canada…
Some varying density smoke was present over north central Alberta and the
south central part of the Northwest Territories which was from a cluster
of wildfires which was still at least smoldering in north central Alberta.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
