DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z April 09, 2024
SMOKE: Central CONUS/Central Canada… An area of light remnant smoke was observed over an area from east-central Saskatchewan south-southeastward across the eastern Dakotas, eastern Nebraska, and extreme northeastward Kansas. Uncertainty exists as to the origin of this smoke, but could perhaps be from the agricultural burning across the central CONUS. A couple smoke plumes were also observed early this afternoon, with smoke moving mainly south-southwestward. Mid-Atlantic/Atlantic… An area of remnant smoke, presumably from agricultural burning across the central CONUS, was seen across the eastern Carolinas extending eastward out over the Atlantic Ocean. This area is moving east-southeastward. AEROSOL/SMOKE: Central-Southern Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Yucatan Peninsula/Central America/Pacific Ocean... A large area of predominantly light to perhaps moderate smoke attributed to widespread seasonal fire activity throughout central-southern Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula, Central America and northern South America continues to be observed blanketing an area from northern Central America to the northern Gulf Coast, with the most dense smoke present across the Bay of Campeche, the western Gulf of Mexico, and the coastal plain of Mexico. Some industrial aerosols may be contributing to this layer as well. Another smaller area of light smoke was observed over northern Colombia, northern Venezuela, and the southern Caribbean just offshore. Hosley THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG map: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
