DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1650Z August 02, 2024

SMOKE:
Canada/Northern United States/Atlantic Ocean...
Mixed density smoke attributed to wildfire activity across
western and central Canada was seen spreading from parts of British
Columbia, to western and northern Alberta, majority of Saskatchewan,
southern-central Manitoba, Ontario and central Quebec, reaching New
England and Newfoundland, and also extending further to the east over
the Atlantic ocean. Extended patches of moderate-density were found over
southern Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and southeastern Ontario,
while detached thick density smoke plumes were observed over southern
Manitoba and southeastern Ontario.

California/Pacific Northwest...
Multiple wildfires continue to burn across the Pacific Northwest including
the Park Fire in northern California and several more sites in central
Oregon and Washington states. Moderate-to-heavy density smoke blanketed
northern California, the majority of Oregon, and southern Washington,
with smoke plumes dispersing towards the north-northeast.

DUST:
A small areas of light Saharan dust could be seen traveling westward
across the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, while another patch of light
Saharan dust was seen approaching the Lesser Antilles coming from the
central Atlantic region.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
