DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z August 06, 2024

SMOKE:
Canada/SE CONUS/Atlantic Ocean...
Mixed density smoke attributed to wildfire activity across northwestern
and central Canada and the Pacific Northwest region of the United States
was seen extending from the NW Yukon and the Northwest Territories,
to central Alberta and Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and eastern Ontario. It
then extends south over northern CONUS, eventually making its way over
the southeast CONUS, and finally reaching further east over the central
Atlantic Ocean.

Due to Hurricane Debby, only a handful of light density individual smoke
plumes were seen this morning and early afternoon.

Several large fires located in NW Yukon, central British Columbia,
Northwest Territories, and central Manitoba were seen producing moderate
to thick density smoke plumes.

California/Pacific Northwest...
An area of mixed density smoke attributed to numerous wildfires throughout
the Pacific Northwest continue to be observed today, including the Park
Fire in northern California, as well as several other fires located
in Washington State, Oregon and Idaho. Moderate density smoke was
observed blanketing the Pacific Northwest region with areas of heavy
density smoke seen in western and eastern Oregon, northern California,
and central Idaho.

DUST:
A moderate amount of Saharan Dust was seen traveling westward across
the Atlantic Ocean reaching the eastern border of the Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
