DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1510Z September 7, 2024

SMOKE:
Canada/United States/Pacific Ocean/Atlantic Ocean...
Along the North American Pacific West Coast, ongoing seasonal burning and
wildfire activity stretching down from the Canadian Northwest Territories
to the US Northwestern states of Washington, Oregon, California, and
Idaho, has produced a significant mass of mixed density smoke. The
combined mass of remnant smoke was observed moving eastwards across the
Canadian interior and Northern US Midwestern states before breaking into
two segments. The Canadian segment continued to shift eastwards over the
Hudson Bay. The US segment pushed Southwards towards the Gulf of Mexico
before wrapping around the Southern bend of the Appalachian mountains,
and into the Atlantic Ocean.

DUST:
A light amount of Saharan Dust was seen traveling westward across the
Atlantic Ocean towards the Lesser Antilles with a lighter amount of
Saharan Dust seen over the eastern Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
