DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1655Z September 16, 2024

SMOKE:
Canada/United States/Atlantic Ocean...
A layer of light density smoke attributed to a combination of seasonal
burning throughout the United States and wildfire activity across
northwestern Canada continues to be seen today. This area of smoke was
observed extending east from the east-central parts of the Northwest
Territories and Saskatchewan to central Ontario and Quebec, before
extending further east across the Labrador Sea and into the northern
Atlantic Ocean. A band of light-to-moderate density smoke was seen
extending south through the Midwest and Great Lakes regions of the United
States from southern Canada, where it then extended southeast from Texas,
moving east towards Florida, just off the Gulf Coast.

DUST:
A light amount of Saharan Dust was seen traveling westward across the
Atlantic Ocean towards the northern Lesser Antilles.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
