DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0105Z September 18, 2024

SMOKE:
Canada/United States/Atlantic Ocean...
A large amount of light density smoke was seen traveling from the
wildfires in northwestern Canada eastward into central and eastern
Canada, and southward into the central United States. Seasonal burning
activity throughout the southeastern United States had pockets of light
density smoke mingled with the Canadian wildfire smoke that was observed
traveling northeast into the northeastern United States, and into the
northern Atlantic Ocean. Patches of moderate density smoke was observed
throughout the Canadian wildfires and was seen traveling eastward through
the northern Canadian territories.

DUST:
A moderate amount of Saharan dust continued to be seen traveling westward
off of the African coast into the Atlantic Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
