DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0120Z September 27, 2024

SMOKE:
United States/Canada…
A layer of light density smoke that was attributed to the seasonal and
wildfires in the pacific northwest of the United States was observed
throughout the northwest and north central United States, and into
central Canada.

Idaho/Oregon/Montana...
Wildfires were continued to be observed in Idaho, and Oregon. These
fires were producing light to moderate smoke in Idaho, and Oregon. Light
to moderate smoke in Idaho was traveling north/northwest into western
Montana.

Arizona...
Several areas of light to moderate density smoke from continued
wildfires throughout Arizona was observed spreading in all directions
within Arizona.

California…
Light to moderate smoke from wildfires in northern California was observed
traveling northeast into the California and Oregon border. In southern
California light density smoke was observed east of Los Angeles traveling
west/northwest into central California.

DUST:
A moderate amount of Saharan Dust was seen traveling westward across
the Atlantic Ocean towards the Lesser Antilles tonight.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
