DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z October 4, 2024

SMOKE:
Midwest/Northeastern and Southeastern United States...
An area of light-to-moderate density smoke attributed to wildfire
activity throughout the Pacific Northwest, specifically western
Oregon, was observed moving east through Idaho, Wyoming and Montana
this morning. As the mass of smoke continued eastward, it gained mass
from additional wildfire activity within Idaho and western Montana,
becoming more moderate in density as it reached the eastern border of
Montana and the Dakotas before extending further east over southern
Quebec and eventually dispersing into the Northeastern region of the
United States. A layer of light density smoke attributed to seasonal
burning continues to be seen throughout the Southeastern United States,
extending south through the Mississippi Valley and along the Gulf Coast.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
