DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z October 10, 2024

SMOKE:
Northwestern/Central/Midwestern/Southeastern United States...
A large area of mixed density smoke attributed to large wildfires in
western Oregon, central Idaho, southwestern Montana, western/northern
Wyoming, and northern Utah continues to be seen stretching eastward
through the Central Plains and continuing southeastward through the
Mississippi River Basin. The residual wildfire smoke and seasonal
burning throughout the Southeastern United States resulted in a layer of
light to moderate density smoke that was seen covering the majority of
the South-Central and Southeastern regions of the United States. This
light-to-moderate density smoke was seen extending south through Texas
and into the Gulf of Mexico, moving east through the Gulf with the
winds of Hurricane Milton, then passing just south of Florida into the
Atlantic Ocean. Moderate density smoke was observed in the Central Plains
region, east of major wildfires in central Idaho, southwestern Montana,
western/northern Wyoming and northeastern Utah, extending through
the Mississippi River Basin and reaching parts of the Gulf Coast near
Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Several light-to-moderate density
smoke plumes were detected throughout the Pacific Northwest, however,
cloud cover over the region obstructed visibility and prevented further
analysis.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
